5 Social Media Trends Worth Noting

Social media platforms are constantly evolving, and that means trends are changing with them. As they begin to implement new features and switch up their algorithms, it’s important to note which aspects are gaining popularity and how you can pivot your content.

We’ve compiled a list of the latest social media trends worth noting to help you utilize content marketing to its full potential!

1. Easily Consumable Content

TikTok’s rise to fame brought with it a renewed interest in short, easily digestible content. When the app first launched, users were only allowed 60 seconds of video, forcing them to create concise content. Shortly thereafter, Instagram introduced Reels, an extension of the app where users can create this same type of content and easily share it through their existing platforms.

This trend can also be recreated through graphic design: Instagram posts that contain clean, minimal graphics with bite-sized information are popular, as followers can quickly receive valuable information.

As attention spans continue to shrink, we expect this trend to continue gaining popularity.

2. Live Streaming

With in-person events becoming inaccessible or downright illegal, companies began to take to live streaming as a way to share events with their followers. Most social media platforms have introduced some sort of live stream feature, including TikTok, Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook.

The possibilities with live streaming are limitless. Your company can broadcast events, hold Q&A’s with founders or industry experts, host tutorials, and more. It’s also a great way to actively engage with your audience, as most platforms give users the opportunity to ask questions in real-time, or even join the live.

3. Shopping

Online shopping has seen a pretty steep increase over the past couple of years, so it’s no surprise that brands are taking advantage of that momentum by promoting their products through social media.

Instagram released a feature where brands can add product tags that lead directly to their merchandise, allowing customers to shop without ever leaving the platform. Facebook now allows merchants to set up shops directly on their page so that customers can browse their available items.

Instagram and Facebook’s coherent approach for purchasing makes a lot of sense, as 54% of social media users use these platforms in order to research potential purchases (not to mention that Instagram is also part of Facebook’s empire). Adding social commerce makes the journey easier and more accessible to the customer, which may have the potential to increase your sales.

4. Inclusivity

Inclusivity and diversity in social media marketing are now more important than ever. Consumers want to support brands that are passionate about the same issues as them and show continued strides towards equity. A study by Accenture found that 41% of shoppers have chosen brands that are more aligned with their beliefs for at least part of their consumption.

This also means steering clear of performative activism. Your social media content should be well informed and involve contributions from members of the marginalized groups you are representing. If your brand does a lot of influencer marketing through TikTok or Instagram, it’s important to ensure that your influencers are diverse.

5. Stories

More than 500 million users engage with Instagram Stories every day, so it’s safe to say that they are a great way to utilize social media. As well, most social media platforms have added some sort of Story-like feature.

Brands are able to post conversational content, such as quick snippets of video campaigns, interviews, or influencer reviews through Stories. This allows the customer to stay engaged with the content, and can also lead to more page visits directly from the Story itself.
